Raquel Martinez

Raquel Martinez – Capula, Mexico
My name is Raquel Ayala Martínez and I am 38 years old. My family and I are from the community of Capula in Mexico. I live with my husband Demetrio, my daughters, and Demetrio’s parents. All of us create pottery as many people do in Capula.
Demetrio and I work in our workshop which is our home together with Demetrio’s parents, and other relatives help us. Our daughters are still too young to work but spend their time playing in the workshop with the clay. In Capula the families are very tight and work together and this is very important.
We form part of the Lead-Free Pottery Project and we hope to have a lot of success with this project and to be an example for our community of a lead-free pottery workshop, and to share what we learn with our community and the show the way to other potters.
Our family is small but very hard working and in our workshop Demetrio,
his parents and I create pieces. In the workshop of my sisters they create pieces as well to fulfill orders. Our dreams are to finish the rooms in our house for our daughters, improve our livelihoods, and stay healthy. (9/January, 2007)
